No dress code is perfect.
As in every area of our lives, clothing and the way we wear it should represent our desire to please God and honor Him. The following dress code is set forth in the interest of modesty as well as our desire to provide ease of interpretation, ease of compliance, and ease of enforcement.
It is the parents' responsibility to insure that their students are in complete compliance with the school's dress code standards. Students may not attend class when not in dress code. The absence from class will be considered excused but not school-related (see Loss of Credit). The work will be permitted to be turned in or the teacher may bring the work to the office. The student will not be permitted to go home to change unless direct communication from a parent grants permission.
Each student will be permitted one dress code violation per quarter. The student will serve a one-hour Saturday detention for the 2nd violation, a two-hour Saturday detention for the 3rd violation, and a three-hour Saturday detention for the 4th violation.
Any additional violations will result in referral to the Dean of Students as well as an in-school suspension. The Dean of Students will establish a “contract” with the student addressing the issue and identifying future consequences.
Tops/Shirts:
All tops must have a standard type collar and may not have more than two buttons unbuttoned without a crew-neck shirt underneath. Uniforms or any shirt with writing, pictures, or other type of art displayed are not permitted.
Definition: standard type collar – those found on dress shirts and “polos”. Traditional collared shirts are shirts that button all the way up to the neck.
If the top/shirt has more than 2 buttons unbuttoned, the shirt underneath must be at least a crew-neck shirt but not a t-shirt. (“Camis” are NOT crew neck and are not in dress code.) At no time can all the buttons of the top/shirt be unbuttoned.
Definition: crew neck – a top which completely covers the collar bone.
Definition: t-shirt – a crew-neck shirt with writing, pictures or other type of art
Pants/Shorts: Jean shorts and any form of a cargo pant is not permitted. Pants or shorts are to have no holes, frays, patches, loops, chains, embroidery, etc. Gym-style shorts are not permitted. Pants and shorts must be proportioned to fit and stay at the waistline. Pajama or medical scrub material is not permitted. Shorts are to be walking shorts and may be cargo style.
Definition: cargo pant – a pant with extra pockets, typically down the leg.
Definition: hole/fray – a hole or a frayed hole of any size
Definition: gym-style – a short without traditional belt loops and pockets.
Definition: walking short – shorts which cover a majority of the thigh at all times
Skirts/Jumpers: Skirts and jumpers need to be knee-length or longer. Slits in skirts need to be knee-length or longer. Any jumper or sundress must be worn with a collared shirt under it.
In general, pants/shorts and skirt/jumpers should be size appropriate and not tight fitting. Much of this is somewhat subjective. The school reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of clothing.
Socks/Shoes: Socks are to be worn with athletic and boys dress shoes. Some type of footwear is to be worn at all times. Slippers or other types of “housewear” are not permitted.
Coats/Jackets/Sweaters/Hoodies: Between 8:10 and 3:30, coats, jackets, and hoodies are not to be worn. Sweaters may be worn over a collared shirt as long as the sweater has no hood. Any black, navy or royal blue fleece may be worn at any time over a collared shirt.
Hair/Accessories: Hair must be kept neat and be cut according to a traditional style.
For boys, hair must be cut above the collar in the back and to the middle of the ear. In the front, the hair should be off the eyebrows. There shall be no shaving or cutting of the hair in streaks or patterns. Extreme and overt hairstyles are not allowed. Hair colors must be natural. Head bands are not permitted. Sideburns may not be lower than the bottom of the ear. Gentlemen are to be clean-shaven (no beard or mustache). They are not to have pierced ears, body piercing, or tattoos.
For girls, moderation should be used with makeup and jewelry. Body piercing, other than ears, is not allowed (this would include “plugs”). Tattoos are not permitted. Extreme and overt hairstyles are not allowed. Hair color must be natural.
Spirit Wear Day: Regular school day pants are required but official KC Christian spirit wear -- including t-shirts and hoodies – is permitted. Spirit wear does not include PE uniform or any shirt that is “hand-created”. Spirit Wear Day is considered the last day of the week that school is in session.
