Scrip is a fund raising program where someone, a KCC parent or a friend, purchases gift cards or gift certificates from the school rather than the retailer. They are the same gift cards available at the retailer, sell for the same price, and spend for the face value. KCC purchases these gift cards from Great Lakes Scrip, a company that purchases these gift cards in bulk at a discount. Hundreds of national retailers participate in the scrip program. For a complete list, go to www.glscrip.com and click on the Retailers tab.
The difference in face value of the gift card and what Great Lakes Scrip buys it for, is then credited back to the school as a rebate. Over time with lots a families participating, schools have earned thousands of dollars while their supporters purchase scrip to spend as cash they would have spent anyway. This program helps national retailers to support non-profit organizations as well as insure customer loyalty from those who purchase scrip. Both non-profit and retailer "win".
For example, Old Navy might offer a 10% rebate on $20 gift cards. If someone purchases $100 worth of Old Navy scrip, the school gets a $10 rebate. The purchaser uses the Old Navy scrip as they would cash.
As of August 2010, KCC has chosen to allow families to earn back 90% of their earned rebate. The remaining 10% is used to cover the shipping and other minor cost to run the program. Families earned rebate can be used towards the current years tuition or as Mission Trip credit for High School students. Families can continue to donate their portion back to the school if they wish.
